FCC Approves Verizon’s Tracfone Purchase

The FCC has approved Verizon’s $6 billion dollar purchase of Tracfone. This will make Verizon one of the largest prepaid providers in the United States. Tracfone is the largest reseller of wireless devices in the country. This purchase will combine the largest MVNO with the largest provider.

Attached to the approved deal are a few CPAs (Consumer Protection Agreements) that they are requiring Verizon to sign. They must send in reports once in a while to describe how they comply with the restrictions.

What does this mean for wireless plan prices? Customers shouldn’t see an increase for the next five years. Verizon promised to continue its participation in the Lifeline program for around seven years.
